Google Contacts may soon streamline video calls across connected apps.

Soon, you'll be able to set a default video call app, streamlining the process.

Google is exploring ways to enhance the Connected Apps experience, particularly for video calls. One potential improvement involves long-pressing the video call button on a contact card. This action would open a menu allowing users to set a default video calling app, such as a carrier-based service or WhatsApp. Setting a third-party app as the default will display its icon on the video call button. Subsequently, a single tap on the button will directly initiate a video call through the chosen app, streamlining the process.
If a contact has multiple numbers, long-pressing the video call button will present a list of all available calling options, further simplifying the process.

Furthermore, if a contact isn't available on the user's default video calling app, a network bar icon will appear on the video call button. This visual cue indicates that tapping the button will initiate a standard carrier-based video call.
